Monster Masks

About

ABOUT THE LESSON: If you're like us, you never really grew out of the love for creating a fun monster mask. Before we start creating, let's chat about fear. The fear of darkness and monsters under the bed are some of the biggest fears kids experience. Encouraging children to draw and create monsters gives them another avenue for expression. Showing that these monsters are not scary and talking about the monster masks can help them feel safe. SUPERSKILLS: Bilateral Function: This skill will be exercised during the activity as the children thread their monster's teeth by holding the cardboard with one hand and threading with the other. This function will further develop during painting, applying triangles, and gluing the eyes, as they will have continuous opportunities to use both their left and right hands. Tactile Exploration: In this activity, the children will touch crinkle paper, bubble wrap, and rice. These objects have different textures to explore and investigate: soft, smooth, rough, hard, and flexible. Form Constancy: The children will identify and recognize objects of different sizes, shapes, and colors during this activity. These objects will then be integrated as they thread around the triangle-shaped mouth, stick smaller brightly colored triangles, and use pool noodles for the eyes.
