ABOUT THE LESSON: This lesson is all about symmetry! What is symmetry? Something is symmetrical when it is the same on both sides. A shape has symmetry if a central dividing line (a mirror line) can be drawn on it, to show that both sides of the shape are exactly the same. Your kids may already know everything about symmetry, that's cool. Ask lots of questions and let them explain it to you using examples! SUPERSKILLS: Fine Motor Skills galore! You are never too old to practise your fine motor skills. To tape something as small and delicate as a tiny cut straw takes a bit of skill even for an adult! In this craft you can teach the kids clever methods to stick small things and cut symmetrically. Encourage them to work accurately and neat. Creating the flapping mechanism is an engineering skill after-all! WHAT YOU'LL NEED: Use what you have and be creative: Scissors Coloring supplies: pastel crayons, sharpies , colour pencils, watercolor/ tempera blocks Rope, wool/ yarn or string thin enough to easily fit through a straw Tube: straw, penne pasta or rolled up paper A4 paper, use thick paper if you have (+-200g) Washing peg/ clothes pin Duct tape or any other tape Decorations: Foam sheet, colour paper, stapler, glue stick, stickers, old magazines
